Pitting is a localized form of corrosion that results in small holes or cavities on the surface of the material. These pits can significantly reduce the material's structural integrity and performance, even if the overall mass loss due to corrosion is minimal.

The susceptibility of a material to pitting depends on several factors, including the material's composition, the presence of alloying elements, surface finish, and the corrosive environment. For instance, stainless steels rely on a passive chromium oxide layer for corrosion resistance. However, if this layer breaks down in specific areas, for example, due to the presence of chloride ions, pitting can initiate.
