Pitchstabilitet

Pitchstabilitet refers to the tendency of a vehicle to resist changes in its pitch angle or to return to a defined pitch attitude after a disturbance. In aviation, pitch stability is part of longitudinal stability, ensuring that after a small change in angle of attack the aircraft tends to return to its trimmed flight attitude. In ships, a similar concept applies in the longitudinal plane, often discussed in terms of metacentric stability.

In aircraft, stability is governed by the relative position of the center of gravity (CG) to the neutral point (NP). If the CG lies forward of the NP, the airplane possesses positive static longitudinal stability. The static margin, the distance between NP and CG (often expressed as a percentage of mean aerodynamic chord), quantifies this stability: a larger positive margin provides stronger stability but can reduce maneuverability. The tailplane or horizontal stabilizer generates restoring moments; configurations such as canards or tailless designs modify the stability balance. Dynamic stability concerns damping of oscillations like the short-period and phugoid modes, aided by tail damping, fuselage aerodynamics, and control systems. Designers adjust tail size and moment arm, wing-tail interactions, and control surface characteristics to achieve the desired balance between stability and controllability.

In ships, pitch stability relates to maintaining favorable longitudinal equilibrium. The longitudinal metacentric height (GM_L) and the CG position determine the restoring moment after pitching disturbances. A positive GM_L yields a restoring pitch moment for small disturbances; too small a GM_L can lead to excessive pitching or, in severe cases, pitchpole in rough seas. Hull form, weight distribution, and ballast are used to maintain adequate longitudinal stability under operating conditions.

Assessment methods include wind tunnel data, flight and sea trials, and stability analyses, with modern systems sometimes using stability augmentation to tailor pitch behavior.
