It is a common issue that can affect the appearance and feel of garments, making them appear worn and less desirable.

Pilling occurs when short fibers on the surface of a yarn become loosened and then tangled together through friction. This friction can happen during normal wear, such as rubbing against other surfaces or clothing, or during washing and drying processes. The fibers that are most prone to pilling are those that are short, fine, and have a low twist. Natural fibers like wool and cotton are susceptible, as are synthetic fibers like acrylic and polyester, especially when blended.

The severity of pilling depends on several factors, including the type of fiber, yarn construction, fabric weave or knit structure, and the finishing processes applied to the textile. Tightly spun yarns and fabrics with a dense structure tend to pill less than loosely constructed ones.

While pilling is often considered a defect, it is a natural consequence of fiber interaction and friction. Manufacturers attempt to minimize pilling through careful selection of fibers, yarn spinning techniques, and fabric construction. Fabric care also plays a significant role; washing garments inside out, using a gentle cycle, and avoiding harsh detergents can help reduce the occurrence of pilling. Various tools and methods exist for removing pills from fabric surfaces, such as fabric shavers or combs.
