Pigmenttiläiskien, often translated as pigment spots or hyperpigmentation, are a common dermatological condition characterized by localized areas of increased melanin production in the skin. Melanin is the pigment responsible for skin color, and its overproduction can lead to the appearance of darker patches. These spots can vary in size, shape, and intensity of color, ranging from light brown to dark brown or even black.

The causes of pigmenttiläiskien are diverse. One of the most frequent triggers is prolonged exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun, which stimulates melanocytes, the cells that produce melanin. Hormonal changes are another significant factor, particularly in conditions like melasma, which is common during pregnancy or due to the use of oral contraceptives. Various treatment options are available to reduce their appearance, including topical creams containing ingredients like hydroquinone, retinoids, or vitamin C, which help to lighten the skin by inhibiting melanin production or promoting cell turnover. More advanced treatments such as chemical peels, laser therapy, and microdermabrasion can also be effective in breaking down excess pigment and improving skin tone. Prevention, primarily through consistent sun protection with high SPF sunscreen and protective clothing, is crucial in minimizing the development of new pigment spots and preventing existing ones from darkening.
