Pigmentkleuring, often referred to as pigment coloration, is a process whereby colorants in solid form—pigments—are dispersed or bound to a substrate to provide durable, lightfast coloration. The pigments used are typically finely ground particles that are insoluble in the medium in which they are applied, distinguishing them from dyes that dissolve. The technique is employed across industries such as textiles, automotive coatings, plastics, paints, printing inks, and cosmetics.

Historically, pigment use dates back to prehistoric caves where natural mineral pigments were mixed with binders. Through the Middle Ages and Renaissance, calcium carbonate and cinnabar became primary pigments in ecclesiastical and royal decoration. The Industrial Revolution introduced synthetic pigments such as phthalocyanine blue and cobalt blue, significantly expanding color palettes and enabling mass production of colored goods.

Chemically, pigment particles may be inorganic (e.g., titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, iron oxides) or organic (e.g., azo pigments, quinacridone derivatives). They interact with binders—such as epoxy resins, acrylic polymers, or natural oils—to form a consistent matrix that adheres to fibers, metals, or plastics. Particle size, shape, and surface chemistry influence light scattering, color strength, and resistance to fading or chemical attack.

Applications are vast. In textiles, pigments are fixed onto fibers via exhaustion or pad-dry-cure processes, producing dyes that resist laundering. Automotive coatings use pigment suspensions in topcoats to achieve gloss, anti‑corrosion properties, and aesthetic appeal. In printing, pigment inks are favored for archival quality because pigments deposit a matte layer that resists dissolving. Cosmetics incorporate pigments for long‑lasting color in foundations and eyeliners.

Environmental and safety considerations drive current research. Heavy metal pigments, such as cadmium and lead, are being phased out due to toxicity. Natural and bio‑based pigments, like curcumin and anthocyanins, are gaining popularity as eco‑friendly alternatives. Regulations such as REACH in Europe and the U.S. Toxic Substances Control Act govern the use, labeling, and disposal of pigments to minimize ecological impact while ensuring consumer safety.
