Piekstroom

Piekstroom is a Dutch term used in electrical engineering to describe the peak current or surge current that occurs in an electrical circuit or device. It denotes the highest instantaneous current, which is often much larger than the continuous operating current. The concept is important for understanding protection settings, component ratings, and circuit behavior during transient events.

Typical sources of piekstroom include inrush current when a power supply or motor starts, charging of capacitors, switching transients, and short-circuit faults. Piekstroom is usually brief but can be substantial in magnitude. It is commonly characterized by its amplitude and duration and is measured with instruments that have sufficient bandwidth, such as fast current probes and oscilloscopes, with the value expressed as a peak current in amperes.

Impact and design considerations: Electrical wiring, fuses, circuit breakers, and power supplies have both continuous current ratings and peak or surge ratings. If the piekstroom exceeds these ratings, components may overheat, trip protection devices, or fail. Design strategies to mitigate piekstroom include soft-start circuits, NTC inrush limiters, pre-charge resistors, and controlled power-up sequences. Accurate assessment of peak current, along with operating duty cycle, is essential for proper derating and protection selection.

Relation to standards and terminology: Piekstroom is closely related to inrush current and transient current specifications, but its exact interpretation can be context-dependent. In some contexts it is synonymous with surge current, while in others it refers specifically to peaks occurring during startup, switching, or fault conditions.
