Perusrehu

Perusrehu, or base feed, is the primary component of an animal’s diet in Finnish livestock farming. It consists mainly of roughage that provides the bulk, fiber, and baseline energy required by herbivorous and ruminant animals. The term refers to feeds such as hay, silage, and other preserved forages, as well as fresh forage when available, and it forms the foundation of the ration before any concentrates or supplements are added.

Common forms of perusrehu include hay (heinä), silage (säilörehu), and other preserved forages, as well as fresh pasture during grazing seasons. The quality and digestibility of perusrehu depend on factors such as harvest maturity, ensiling or drying quality, moisture content, and fermentation quality. While straw can contribute to bulk, it is usually low in energy and protein and is typically used as a roughage filler rather than a primary feed.

Nutritionally, perusrehu provides fiber and baseline energy and supports rumen function and daily intake. Its quality strongly influences animal health and productivity, and it is often fed ad libitum or in large portions to meet maintenance and production needs. Management practices focus on maintaining palatability, preventing mold or spoilage, ensuring adequate water, and balancing with other ration components.

In practice, perusrehu is complemented by concentrates, protein supplements, minerals, and vitamins tailored to species, life stage, and production goals. In Finland, the role of perusrehu is shaped by climate and seasons, with stored roughage forming a crucial base during long winters and pasture providing seasonal supplement in summer.
