Perturbationspotentialen, often translated as perturbation potentials, are a concept used in celestial mechanics and other fields of physics to describe the effects of deviations from an idealized system. In the context of celestial mechanics, the unperturbed system is typically an idealized two-body problem, where two celestial bodies orbit each other under the influence of only their mutual gravitational attraction. This idealized scenario leads to Keplerian orbits, which are perfect ellipses.

However, real celestial systems involve more than two bodies. The gravitational influence of other planets, moons, or even the non-spherical shape of the main bodies introduces additional forces. These additional forces are what the perturbation potential quantifies. It represents the difference between the actual gravitational potential of the system and the idealized two-body potential.

By analyzing the perturbation potential, astronomers can calculate the deviations from perfect Keplerian orbits. These deviations, known as perturbations, cause the orbital elements (such as semi-major axis, eccentricity, and inclination) to change over time. Understanding these perturbations is crucial for accurate prediction of planetary positions, satellite trajectories, and the long-term stability of the solar system.
