Permissiongranting is the process by which an authority determines and assigns the rights for a subject to perform actions on a resource. It defines who may do what, under which conditions, and for how long, and it is a fundamental component of access control in information systems. The granting decision is typically policy-driven and enforced at the point of access, ensuring that only authorized actions are permitted.

Common permission models include access control lists, role-based access control, and attribute-based access control. In an ACL, each resource maintains a list of principals and their allowed operations. In RBAC, permissions are tied to roles rather than individuals, and users inherit those roles. In ABAC, access decisions rely on attributes of the user, the resource, and the context. Federated or delegated models can extend permissiongranting across administrative boundaries using tokens or certificates.
