Perissa

Perissa is a village on the southeast coast of Santorini, Greece. It forms part of the Thira regional unit in the South Aegean and is centered along the long black-sand beach known as Perissa Beach, a well-known feature of the island’s coast.

The beach and landscape reflect Santorini’s volcanic origin. The shore is a dark, volcanic sand and pebble mix with clear, relatively shallow water near the shoreline. The adjacent stretch, often called Perivolos, continues the black-sand coast and is lined with beach bars and water-sport facilities.

Historically, the area lies near the site of Ancient Thera, located on the Mesa Vouno hill overlooking the coast. In modern times, Perissa developed as a popular tourist resort, preserving traditional Cycladic architectural elements in the hillside settlements while the beachfront area focuses on hospitality and services for visitors.

Economy and amenities in Perissa are largely driven by tourism. The village offers a range of accommodations, from hotels to guesthouses, and hosts numerous tavernas, cafes, and shops. The beachfront area includes diving centers, windsurfing opportunities, and boat tours, with a reputation for a relaxed nightlife compared with some other Santorini destinations.
