Performancewrinkling

Performancewrinkling is a term used in materials science and engineering to describe the degradation or alteration of functional performance in a component, product, or system that arises from the formation or growth of wrinkles in a material layer, surface coating, circuit, or interface during service. The phenomenon can affect optical, electrical, thermal, and mechanical performance, depending on the context, and may be observed in flexible electronics, coatings, textiles, and biomedical devices.

Wrinkles form when compressive stresses exceed a structure’s buckling limit, or when differential thermal expansion, residual manufacturing stresses, cyclic loading, or environmental factors cause local deformation. In coatings and films, wrinkles can create nonuniform thickness, crack initiation, or increased wear. In electronic or sensing applications, surface undulations can disrupt conduction pathways, alter contact resistance, or distort signals. In optics, wrinkle patterns can scatter light and reduce transmittance or image quality. The scale and geometry of wrinkles determine the severity of performance loss.

Measurement and mitigation involve noncontact imaging, profilometry, microscopy, and mechanical testing to quantify wrinkle dimensions and associated performance drop. Modeling with finite element methods helps predict wrinkle formation under given load histories. Mitigation strategies include controlling deposition parameters and residual stresses, substrate stiffening, thermal management, and designing devices to tolerate or even exploit controlled wrinkle patterns. Understanding performancewrinkling supports reliability in flexible electronics, curved displays, protective coatings, and wearable systems.
