Penetranttarkastus, also known as liquid penetrant inspection (LPI), is a widely used non-destructive testing (NDT) method for detecting surface-breaking defects in solid materials. The technique relies on the principle that a liquid penetrant can enter open defects, such as cracks, porosity, or voids, due to capillary action. Once the penetrant is introduced to the surface, it is allowed to dwell for a sufficient period to ensure full penetration into any defects. Afterward, the excess penetrant is removed, and a developer is applied to draw the penetrant out of the defects, making them visible under appropriate lighting.

Penetranttarkastus is particularly effective for detecting fine surface cracks and discontinuities in non-porous materials such as metals, plastics, and ceramics. The method is commonly used in industries like aerospace, automotive, and manufacturing, where surface integrity is critical. It can be applied to various material types, including ferrous and non-ferrous metals, composites, and glass.

The process involves three main steps: application of the penetrant, removal of excess penetrant, and application of a developer. The penetrant can be either fluorescent or visible dye-based, depending on the inspection requirements. Fluorescent penetrants require ultraviolet (UV) light for visualization, while dye-based penetrants are inspected under normal light. The developer enhances the visibility of the penetrant within the defects, allowing for easier detection.

Penetranttarkastus offers several advantages, including simplicity, cost-effectiveness, and the ability to detect very small defects. However, it is limited to surface-breaking flaws and cannot detect subsurface defects. Proper surface preparation, such as cleaning and roughening, is essential for optimal results. The method also requires careful handling of chemicals and adherence to safety protocols due to the potential hazards associated with penetrants and developers.
