In operation, pellets are stored in a hopper and fed into the combustion chamber by an auger. The burner ignites the pellets, creating a controlled flame that heats a heat exchanger. Depending on the configuration, the heat exchanger may warm water that circulates through radiators or underfloor systems, or air that is distributed by fans. Control units regulate pellet feed, combustion temperature, and cycling, often with thermostatic or programmable controls for efficiency and comfort.

Pelletkatlaid systems come in several forms. A pellet boiler provides central heating and often domestic hot water. Room pellet stoves offer localized heating and can be used in combination with other heating sources. Some installations use condensing technology or hybrid arrangements with solar thermal or heat storage to maximize efficiency. Systems rely on high-quality wood pellets and proper installation, venting, and maintenance.

Efficiency and environmental impact are central considerations. Modern pelletkatlaid units can achieve high seasonal efficiency and relatively low emissions when operated with clean burning and well-made pellets. They are considered a renewable energy option because the CO2 released during combustion is largely offset by the CO2 absorbed during the growth of the original biomass, provided the pellets are sourced responsibly and storage and handling minimize moisture and ash.

Maintenance and safety require regular attention. Routine servicing by a qualified technician, ash removal, chimney or vent cleaning, and the use of CO detectors are recommended. Proper pellet storage and adherence to manufacturer guidelines contribute to reliable performance and safety.
