Peliteorioihin, often translated as "game theory," is a mathematical framework used to study strategic interactions between rational decision-makers. It analyzes situations where the outcome for each participant depends not only on their own actions but also on the actions of others. This field has applications in a wide range of disciplines, including economics, political science, psychology, biology, and computer science.

At its core, game theory seeks to predict the choices that rational agents will make and the resulting outcomes. Key concepts include players, strategies, and payoffs. Players are the decision-makers involved in the game. Strategies are the possible actions that each player can take. Payoffs represent the outcomes or rewards that each player receives based on the combination of strategies chosen by all players.

A fundamental concept in game theory is the Nash equilibrium, named after mathematician John Nash. A Nash equilibrium is a state where no player can improve their payoff by unilaterally changing their strategy, assuming all other players' strategies remain unchanged. This concept helps to identify stable outcomes in strategic interactions.

Another important area within game theory is the distinction between cooperative and non-cooperative games. In cooperative games, players can form binding agreements and coordinate their strategies. In non-cooperative games, players act independently, and any coordination is a result of strategic foresight rather than explicit agreements. The Prisoner's Dilemma is a classic example of a non-cooperative game that illustrates the tension between individual rationality and collective well-being. Game theory provides a powerful lens for understanding complex decision-making scenarios and predicting behavior in strategic environments.
