Peilirefleksitähtäimissä, often referred to as reflex sights or red dot sights, are non-magnifying optical sights that allow the user to see through a transparent lens with a reticle (often a red dot) projected onto the lens. The reticle appears at a distance, seemingly superimposed on the target. This design eliminates the need to align two separate points of aim, making target acquisition faster and more intuitive, especially for moving targets.

The principle of operation involves a light source, typically an LED, illuminating a reticle pattern etched or displayed on a transparent element. This light is then reflected by a curved mirror or a specialized lens system towards the user's eye. The curvature of the mirror or lens is precisely calculated so that the reflected reticle appears at infinity, meaning the user's eye does not need to refocus when shifting their gaze between the reticle and the target. This is a key characteristic that distinguishes them from traditional iron sights or magnified scopes.

Peilirefleksitähtäimissä are commonly used in firearms for sports shooting, hunting, and military applications. Their advantages include rapid target acquisition, ease of use with both eyes open (allowing for greater situational awareness), and suitability for close- to medium-range engagements. They are also popular on airsoft replicas and other training tools. While they do not provide magnification, their speed and simplicity make them a preferred choice for many dynamic shooting scenarios.
