Common characteristics include gaps in sidewalk networks, obstructed or unsafe crossings, long blocks, wide turning radii, high vehicle speeds, insufficient street lighting, missing curb ramps, or inadequate wayfinding. The absence of amenities like seating or shelter from weather can also contribute. In some cases, pedestrian-unfriendliness arises from spaces designed primarily for vehicles rather than people.

Impacts include increased risk of traffic injuries, reduced physical activity, social isolation, and economic effects on street-level businesses. Pedestrian-unfriendly environments can disproportionately affect children, the elderly, people with disabilities, and others without access to private vehicles.

Policy and design approaches aim to reduce these barriers. Concepts such as Complete Streets, Vision Zero, and pedestrian-oriented development advocate for continuous sidewalks, protected crosswalks, shorter crossing distances, traffic calming, accessible curb ramps, better lighting, wayfinding, and amenities. Implementation challenges can include funding, dense development, maintenance, and coordination across agencies.

The term is used descriptively rather than as a formal standard, and assessments often rely on observed conditions, pedestrian injury data, and user surveys to determine where improvements are needed.
