PcG

PCG is an acronym that can refer to several concepts in computing and digital media. The two most common meanings are Procedural Content Generation in video games and the Permuted Congruential Generator family of pseudorandom number generators.

Procedural Content Generation (PCG) in games denotes the automatic creation of game content—such as levels, maps, textures, or items—by algorithms with limited or no direct human design input. The goal is to produce varied and scalable content while keeping development costs manageable. Techniques range from noise-based terrain generation and procedural dungeon layout to grammar-based systems and constraint solving. Benefits include expanded content, reproducible worlds from a known seed, and faster iteration. Challenges involve ensuring quality, balance, narrative coherence, and player-facing controllability. Effective PCG often uses parameterization, seedable reproducibility, and validation processes.

Permuted Congruential Generator (PCG) refers to a family of pseudorandom number generators designed by Melissa E. O’Neill. Built on a simple linear congruential generator with an output permutation, PCG aims for small footprint, portability, fast performance, and strong statistical properties for non-cryptographic uses. Variants include PCG32 and PCG64, with different state sizes and output permutations. PCG routines are used in software libraries and games to provide reliable randomness; they are not designed for cryptographic security.
