It is distinct from prepaid and traditional postpaid arrangements.

PAU is widely used in utilities, cloud services, and certain rental or shared-use ecosystems. In utilities, meters capture consumption and generate periodic invoices. In cloud computing, services are billed according to compute hours, data transfer, or storage used. In equipment rental and pay-per-use mobility services, users are charged based on the time or distance used.

Billing processes often involve credit checks, deposits, credit limits, or automated card on file, and customers usually receive itemized invoices. Some systems offer flexible payment methods and dispute resolution channels. Accurate usage measurement is essential; disputes may arise from meter errors or proration rules.

Advantages include lower upfront costs for customers, alignment of price with value, and flexibility. Disadvantages for providers include exposure to revenue volatility, higher administrative costs, potential fraudulent usage, and the need for reliable metering and fraud prevention measures. Consumers may face unpredictable bills if usage spikes or if measurement is inaccurate.

Regulatory considerations emphasize transparency, fair pricing, accurate metering, and privacy. PAU models are evolving with digital meters, smart devices, and scalable billing platforms, enabling more granular usage tracking and auto-pay options. In practice, many markets employ hybrid models that blend PAU with minimum charges or tiered pricing.
