Patjatäytteet refer to the materials used to fill mattresses. The choice of filling significantly impacts a mattress's comfort, support, durability, and thermal properties. Historically, common fillings included straw, horsehair, and cotton. Modern mattresses utilize a wider array of materials, often in combination, to achieve specific sleeping experiences.

One prevalent category is foam. Polyurethane foam, often simply called foam or polyurethane, is a cost-effective option offering varying degrees of firmness and support. Memory foam, a type of viscoelastic polyurethane foam, is known for its ability to contour to the body, relieving pressure points. Latex foam, derived from rubber trees, provides a responsive and durable feel, often with good breathability.

Innerspring systems, a traditional core component, consist of coils that offer support and bounce. These coils can be arranged in various configurations, such as Bonnell coils or pocketed coils, with the latter offering more independent movement and reduced motion transfer.

Natural fibers are also used as mattress fillings. Cotton provides a breathable and soft surface, though it can compress over time. Wool is a popular choice for its temperature-regulating properties, moisture-wicking abilities, and natural fire resistance. Other natural materials like bamboo fiber or silk can be incorporated for added softness and breathability.

The combination of these materials in layers allows mattress manufacturers to create a diverse range of products catering to different preferences and needs, from firm support to plush comfort. The durability and performance of a mattress are largely determined by the quality and type of its patjatäytteet.
