It is not tied to a single real-world tradition; descriptions vary by author and setting, but most portray it as a small, hand-spun top with a symmetrical body and a short tip designed for stable rotation.

In most renderings, the patareidel is a compact object made of wood, ceramic, or bone, typically two to four centimeters tall. Surfaces may be decorated with geometric patterns, sigils, or colors linked to local beliefs. The design emphasizes balance and a clean launch, allowing for rapid, predictable spins.
