Parentfor

Parentfor, commonly written as parentFor, is a term used in computer science and information architecture to denote a reference or operation that yields the parent of a given node in a hierarchical structure. The term emphasizes purpose: it returns a parent rather than a child or descendant.

The construction is a compound formed from parent and for, appearing in documentation and code comments to convey navigational intent. It is used in discussions of tree traversal, component hierarchies, and data models that encode parent–child relations. As a concept, it spans multiple domains where hierarchical navigation is required, including data structures, user interface frameworks, and graph-based models.

Applications

In programming, a function named parentFor(node) is used to access the immediate parent. In DOM-like models, this concept maps to a property such as parent or parentNode. Limitations

In graphs that allow multiple parents or non-tree structures, the notion of a single parentFor may be ambiguous. Root nodes, by definition, lack a parent. Clear conventions are thus required to handle multiple-parent or circular configurations.
