Pantone colors, or Pantone Farben, refer to the Pantone Matching System (PMS), a standardized color reproduction system used in graphic design, printing, and manufacturing to ensure consistent color communication across materials and processes.

Each color is assigned a unique numerical code. The code is often accompanied by a suffix that indicates the type of stock: C for coated, U for uncoated, and M for matte. Pantone publishes physical swatch books and digital libraries that designers and printers use to select and reproduce colors.

Usage: Pantone colors are used to achieve brand consistency, specify spot colors in print workflows, and guide product packaging and textiles. They contrast with process colors (CMYK), which mix inks to approximate colors rather than reproduce exact matches.

Digital workflows: Pantone colors are represented in software tools and color management systems; however, on-screen representations may differ from printed results due to monitor calibration and substrate properties. Final color depends on substrate, ink, printing method, and lighting.

Color of the Year: Pantone selects a Color of the Year that influences design trends and product development.

History and ownership: The Pantone system was developed by the Pantone company and remains a standard for color communication; the Pantone brand is now part of X-Rite Pantone, a subsidiary of X-Rite.
