Palánta

Palánta is a Hungarian term that refers to a young plant raised in a nursery or similar setting and intended for transplantation. The concept covers plants propagated from seed as well as those produced vegetatively, and it is a common stage in horticulture, agriculture, and forestry.

In production, palánták are grown in controlled conditions in trays, pots, or plug flats until they reach a size suitable for field planting. Seed-origin palánták begin with germination and development of the first true leaves, while vegetatively propagated stock develops from cuttings or other starting material. After sufficient growth, plants are hardened off to gradually adapt to outdoor conditions before transplanting.

Transplanting palánták allows crops to establish more reliably and with improved uniformity compared with direct sowing in the field.
