Palaventtiileitä, often translated as butterfly valves, are a type of quarter-turn valve used to regulate or isolate flow. They consist of a disc mounted on a shaft. When the valve is open, the disc is rotated 90 degrees to allow fluid to pass. When the valve is closed, the disc is turned to block the flow path. The name "butterfly" comes from the visual resemblance of the disc to a butterfly's wings when partially open.

These valves are known for their simplicity, compact size, and relatively low cost, making them a popular choice in various industrial applications. They are suitable for both liquid and gas services, and can handle a wide range of pressures and temperatures depending on the materials used in their construction. Common applications include water treatment, HVAC systems, chemical processing, and food and beverage production.

The operation of a palaventtiili is typically controlled by a lever, gearbox, or actuator. The disc's position can be adjusted to control the flow rate, allowing for throttling services, although they are most commonly used for on-off applications. The sealing mechanism relies on the disc pressing against a seat within the valve body. Different seat materials, such as rubber, PTFE, or metal, are available to suit specific service requirements. Maintenance is generally straightforward due to the valve's simple design.
