Pakistanadministered

Pakistan-administered is a term used to describe portions of the former princely state of Jammu and Kashmir that have been under Pakistani control since the 1947–48 conflict. The phrase most commonly refers to Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) and Gilgit-Baltistan (GB). In discussions about the Kashmir dispute, some sources distinguish these areas from Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir, while others use alternative labels such as Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. The terminology reflects the broader, unresolved status of the region and its political sensitivities.

Azad Jammu and Kashmir operates with its own locally elected government and constitution, including a president, a prime minister, and a legislative assembly. Gilgit-Baltistan is administered as a federal territory with a locally elected assembly and a governor, and Pakistan has pursued policies toward expanding autonomy, though GB is not universally recognized as a full province. Both areas are governed under Pakistan’s constitutional and legal framework, while their ultimate sovereignty remains disputed between Pakistan and India and is subject to international diplomacy and UNlight resolutions.

Geographically, the areas lie in the northern part of the Kashmir region, with GB covering part of the Karakoram and Himalaya ranges and AJ K surrounding the western portion. The region is ethnically and linguistically diverse, with languages such as Kashmiri, Shina, Balti, and Urdu spoken among communities. The Kashmir dispute has led to limited international intervention and a long-standing border, the Line of Control, separating Pakistani-administered areas from Indian-administered ones.
