Paberikunstil

Paberikunstil is a Finnish term that translates to "paper art." It encompasses a wide range of artistic disciplines and techniques that utilize paper as the primary medium. This art form can be both decorative and functional, ranging from intricate sculptures to simple collages.

The history of paper art is deeply intertwined with the invention and widespread use of paper itself. As paper became more accessible, artists began to explore its versatile properties. In various cultures, paper has been folded, cut, painted, and glued to create a multitude of forms. Traditional techniques like origami, the Japanese art of paper folding, and kirigami, which involves both folding and cutting paper, are prominent examples of paper art.

Contemporary paper art often pushes the boundaries of traditional methods. Artists employ various types of paper, including handmade papers, recycled papers, and specialty papers, to achieve specific textures and effects. Techniques such as paper cutting (often referred to as scherenschnitte), quilling (rolling and shaping strips of paper), paper casting, and paper mache are commonly used.
