Self-portraits examine authorship; group portraits capture relationships or official duties.

Functions include identification, commemoration, social signaling, and narrative or psychological exploration. Cultural meaning reflects norms of beauty, status, and age and may encode ideology or propaganda. Ethical considerations in modern portraiture address consent, privacy, and image rights, especially for non-consenting subjects or AI-generated likenesses.
