Paahtimo

Paahtimo is a Finnish term meaning a coffee roasting facility or business. The word derives from the verb paahtaa, to roast, and the suffix -imo, which forms nouns indicating a place or activity. In Finnish usage, paahtimo refers to both the physical roastery where green coffee beans are roasted and the company that performs the roasting, rather than to a consumer cafe.

At a paahtimo, green coffee beans are processed in roasting equipment, typically drum roasters or hot-air roasters. The roasting process requires careful control of temperature, time, and airflow to produce a desired roast level, such as light, medium, or dark. Roasters often develop profiles that bring out origin characteristics and balance acidity, sweetness, and body. After roasting, beans are cooled, inspected, and packaged for wholesale or direct sale. Some paahtimos also operate tasting rooms or cafés and offer sampling, training, or cupping sessions.

Economy and culture: Finland has a high per-capita coffee consumption and a thriving specialty-coffee scene in which many independent paahtimos supply cafés, retailers, and consumers. Direct trade, transparency about sourcing, and sustainability are common considerations for many roasteries. The term paahtimo can also appear in company names and branding to emphasize the artisanal nature of the roasting process.
