PSSE

PSSE, or Power System Simulator for Engineering, is a widely used electrical power system analysis software package originally developed by Power Technologies International (PTI) and now marketed by Siemens PTI. It provides a comprehensive environment for modeling, simulating, and analyzing large electric power transmission networks.

The software supports steady-state analyses such as AC and DC load flow, short-circuit calculations, and contingency analysis. It also includes dynamic and transient simulations for stability studies (transient stability and small-signal stability) and integrates optimization tools such as security-constrained optimal power flow (SCOPF). PSSE is designed to handle large-scale networks and complex operating scenarios typical of modern power systems.

PSSE models encompass network topology, generators, loads, controllers, and protective equipment; data are organized into cases and can be shared with other tools. A programming interface, notably a Python scripting API, enables automation, custom analyses, and integration with external workflows and data pipelines. This scripting capability is widely used to accelerate planning studies, automate repetitive tasks, and connect PSSE analyses with other software environments.

Users of PSSE include electric utilities, independent system operators, engineering consultancies, and academic researchers. It is employed for transmission planning and reliability studies, equipment and topology assessments, contingency and stability analyses, and operational support in real-time or near-real-time environments. As proprietary software, PSSE is licensed by Siemens PTI, with ongoing development to address evolving grid challenges, including higher renewable penetration, integration of modern measurement and communication data, and interoperability with other simulation tools.
