PSM

PSM stands for several terms in different fields, but the most widely recognized is Process Safety Management. Process Safety Management is a systematic approach to preventing and mitigating incidents involving highly hazardous chemicals in industrial processes. In the United States, PSM is codified by OSHA in the Process Safety Management standard, 29 CFR 1910.119, established to reduce the risk of fires, explosions, and toxic releases. It is widely adopted in chemical, petrochemical, pharmaceutical, and related industries, and it underpins best practices for protecting workers and the surrounding community.

The OSHA PSM standard organizes activities into 14 elements designed to prevent or mitigate major incidents. These include: employee involvement; process safety information; process hazard analysis; operating procedures; training; contractors; pre-startup safety review; management of change; mechanical integrity; hot work permits; incident investigation; emergency planning and response; compliance audits; and handling of trade secrets. Organizations typically implement formal programs, audits, and management systems to ensure ongoing compliance and continuous safety improvements.

Other uses of the acronym PSM appear in different domains. In software engineering, PSM can denote Platform-Specific Modeling, a stage in model-driven development that targets a particular execution platform. In agile project management, PSM is also shorthand for Professional Scrum Master, a certification offered by Scrum.org. In broadcasting and media, Public Service Media describes publicly funded, non-commercial media organizations and services. The intended meaning of PSM is usually clear from the surrounding context.
