Platform-specific refers to software elements tailored to a particular platform, including its operating system, hardware, runtimes, or device characteristics. Platform-specific code directly uses native APIs and services to maximize compatibility and performance on that platform, often at the expense of portability.

Scope includes operating systems (Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android), CPU architectures (x86, ARM, MIPS), runtimes and frameworks (JVM, .NET, WebAssembly), and hardware features (GPU, sensors, secure Enclave). Build tooling, packaging formats, and deployment environments also contribute to platform specificity.

Advantages include access to platform-native features, improved performance, and smoother user experiences. Disadvantages include reduced portability, increased maintenance, and the need to manage separate code paths, tests, and deployments for each platform.

Common strategies: using platform-conditional code via language features (preprocessor directives) or runtime checks; using abstraction layers or cross-platform frameworks to minimize duplication; writing platform-specific modules or plugins; and leveraging platform-neutral interfaces with adapters. Examples: native Windows APIs vs POSIX, or using mobile frameworks that generate platform-targeted code.

Considerations: trade-offs between speed of development and long-term maintenance; versioning of platform APIs; testing across platforms; ensuring parity of features; security implications of platform isolation. In practice, many projects aim for a balance: platform-agnostic core logic with platform-specific adapters.
