PPIprophylax
PPIprophylax is a term used to describe the prophylactic use of proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) to prevent gastroduodenal complications in patients judged to be at elevated risk of gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding or ulcers. The concept is commonly applied in settings such as critical care, perioperative care, and among patients with high-dose nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), corticosteroids, or coagulation abnormalities.
Rationale and mechanism: PPIs suppress gastric acid secretion by inhibiting the H+/K+-ATPase enzyme in parietal cells.
Indications and usage: In intensive care units, PPIprophylax may be used for stress ulcer prophylaxis in patients
Safety and considerations: Potential adverse effects associated with PPIprophylax include increased risk of Clostridioides difficile infection,
Evidence and guidelines: Recommendations vary by region and patient population; many guidelines endorse selective PPI prophylaxis
