PINPads

A PINpad is a device used to enter a personal identification number (PIN). These devices are commonly found at point-of-sale terminals, ATMs, and other transaction points. PINpads typically consist of a keypad with numerical buttons, and sometimes additional function keys. They are designed to securely capture the PIN entered by a user.

Modern PINpads often incorporate encryption technology to protect the entered PIN data from being intercepted. This encryption is crucial for preventing fraud. When a user enters their PIN, the PINpad encrypts the number before sending it to the payment terminal or ATM. The terminal then transmits this encrypted data to the financial institution for verification.

There are various types of PINpads, including standalone devices that connect to a separate terminal, and integrated units where the keypad is part of the terminal itself. Some PINpads are designed for indoor use, while others are ruggedized for outdoor environments and harsh conditions. Security standards, such as PCI PTS (Payment Card Industry PIN Transaction Security) and EMV (Europay, Mastercard, and Visa), govern the design and manufacturing of secure PINpads to ensure data protection. The physical design of PINpads also often includes features to deter "shoulder surfing," where an unauthorized person attempts to view the PIN as it is being entered.
