PCIevirtaliittimet, also known as PCIe virtual connectors, are a mechanism within virtualization environments that allows virtual machines to directly access and utilize physical Peripheral Component Interconnect Express (PCIe) devices. This technology bypasses the host operating system's I/O path, providing near-native performance for devices like GPUs, network interface cards, and NVMe SSDs within the virtual machine.

The primary benefit of PCIe virtualization is performance. By granting direct access, it significantly reduces latency and overhead that would otherwise be introduced by software-based I/O emulation. This makes it crucial for demanding workloads such as high-performance computing, real-time data processing, machine learning, and gaming within virtualized environments.

Implementation typically involves hardware-assisted virtualization features, commonly referred to as I/O Memory Management Unit (IOMMU) technologies like Intel VT-d or AMD-Vi. These technologies enable the isolation and direct assignment of PCIe devices to specific virtual machines. The hypervisor plays a key role in managing the allocation and passthrough of these devices.

While offering significant performance gains, PCIe virtualization requires careful configuration. It can limit the flexibility of device sharing between multiple virtual machines, as a device is usually dedicated to a single VM at a time. Compatibility between hardware, hypervisor, and guest operating system is also a critical factor for successful implementation. PCIe virtualization is a powerful tool for unlocking the full potential of specialized hardware within virtualized infrastructures.
