Oversimplifiserer refers to the act of presenting something complex as simpler than it actually is, by removing nuance, context, or important details. The term describes a process or result where multifaceted phenomena are reduced to a single cause, a binary outcome, or overly general statements, often at the expense of accuracy.

The concept is widely used in media, politics, education, and science communication. Examples include attributing a political issue to one factor, claiming a disease has a single cause, or stating that a historical event can be explained with a simple narrative. Oversimplifisering can be intentional for rhetorical effect or unintentional due to time pressure, audience expectations, or limited space.

Consequences of oversimplifisering include misinformation, distorted understanding, and poor decision making. It can also perpetuate stereotypes or undermine trust when the limits of knowledge become apparent. In some cases, oversimplification obscures important trade-offs, uncertainties, or interactions between factors.

Causes and mechanisms often involve cognitive biases such as the desire for clear, confirmable narratives, as well as practical constraints in journalism, policy debate, or education. Distinguishing between forenkling (a neutral or acceptable simplification for accessibility) and oversimplifisering (a reduction that neglects essential complexity) is important in evaluation and communication.

To mitigate oversimplification, communicators can present caveats, acknowledge uncertainty, outline multiple contributing factors, provide contextual information, and avoid absolute claims when the evidence is uncertain.
