The concept emphasizes material bonding and interfacial design, rather than digital or optical augmentation, to modify surface properties such as durability, optical response, or electrical performance.

Overlaysphysically are produced through bonding methods that create a solid, enduring interface. Common approaches include lamination of polymer films with adhesives, chemical or physical vapor deposition of thin films, sputtering, electroplating, and mechanical interlocking via textured surfaces.
