Osteoporosisassociated refers to conditions, symptoms, or complications that arise as a direct or indirect consequence of osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is a skeletal disorder characterized by reduced bone mass and microarchitectural deterioration of bone tissue, leading to increased bone fragility and susceptibility to fracture.

The most common and significant issue associated with osteoporosis is fractures. These fractures, often referred to as fragility fractures, occur with minimal or no trauma and are most prevalent in the hip, spine, wrist, and shoulder. Hip fractures, in particular, are a major cause of morbidity and mortality, leading to significant disability, loss of independence, and increased healthcare costs. Spinal fractures, which can be compression fractures, may cause chronic back pain, loss of height, and a stooped posture known as kyphosis.

Pain is another prevalent symptom associated with osteoporosis, especially if fractures occur. Chronic pain can result from vertebral compression fractures and can significantly impact a person's quality of life, mobility, and mental well-being.

Reduced mobility and functional decline are often direct results of osteoporosis-associated fractures and pain. The fear of falling and subsequent fracture can also lead to avoidance of physical activities, further exacerbating muscle weakness and increasing the risk of falls. This can create a cycle of decline, leading to a loss of independence and the need for assistance with daily living activities.

In severe cases, osteoporosis can lead to changes in body shape, such as a loss of height and the development of kyphosis, which can affect breathing and digestion. Psychological impacts, including depression and anxiety, are also associated with the chronic pain, disability, and fear of fracture that can accompany osteoporosis.
