Ortostaatin

Ortostaatin, also known as orthostatic hypotension or postural hypotension, is a condition characterized by a significant decrease in blood pressure that occurs when a person moves from a lying or sitting position to an upright standing position. This sudden drop in blood pressure can lead to symptoms such as dizziness, lightheadedness, weakness, and in some cases, fainting.

The condition results from the body's inability to properly regulate blood pressure in response to postural changes. Under normal circumstances, the autonomic nervous system adjusts heart rate and blood vessel tone to maintain stable blood pressure. In individuals with ortostaatin, these mechanisms are impaired, leading to insufficient blood flow to the brain upon standing.

Ortostaatin can be caused by various factors, including dehydration, prolonged bed rest, certain medications (such as antihypertensives, diuretics, and antidepressants), neurological disorders, or underlying health conditions such as Parkinson's disease or diabetes. It is more common among older adults due to age-related declines in autonomic function.

Diagnosis typically involves measuring blood pressure and heart rate while the patient moves from a seated or supine position to an upright stance, often using an orthostatic vital signs test. Treatment aims to address the underlying cause, if identifiable, and may include lifestyle modifications such as increased fluid and salt intake, physical counter-maneuvers, and medication adjustments. In some cases, medications like fludrocortisone or midodrine may be prescribed to help maintain blood pressure stability.

Managing ortostaatin involves close monitoring, especially in vulnerable populations, to prevent falls and associated injuries. Recognizing symptoms early and implementing appropriate interventions can significantly improve quality of life for affected individuals.
