Organelle-associated is a term used in cell biology to describe molecules or processes that localize to, interact with, or function at cellular organelles. It is commonly applied to proteins, RNAs, lipids, or protein complexes that reside on or near organelles such as the nucleus, mitochondria, endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi apparatus, lysosomes, peroxisomes, chloroplasts, and others. The designation can indicate stable residency or transient association during trafficking, signaling, or metabolism.

Examples include organelle-associated proteins that are imported into organelles via targeting signals, proteins anchored to membranes at organelles, or proteins that shuttle between compartments. Organelle-associated RNAs, such as mRNAs localized for local translation at the endoplasmic reticulum or mitochondria, are another category. Research also studies organelle contact sites, such as mitochondria-associated membranes, where two organelles interact to coordinate functions.

Methods used to study organelle association include subcellular fractionation with proteomics, fluorescence microscopy and live-cell imaging, and proximity labeling approaches (for example BioID or APEX) to map the neighborhood of a given organelle. RNA sequencing of organelle-enriched fractions and crosslinking-based techniques are also employed. Challenges in this area include distinguishing genuine localization from experimental artifacts, accounting for dynamic relocation of molecules, and preventing cross-contamination between compartments.

Understanding organelle association helps explain compartmentalized metabolism and signaling, organelle biogenesis, and disease mechanisms linked to mislocalization or faulty targeting. The concept is widely used across cell biology to interpret how spatial organization governs cellular function.
