The primary advantage of onsite systems is direct control over data and infrastructure. Organizations can implement their own security protocols, customize hardware and software to specific needs, and ensure compliance with stringent regulatory requirements. This can lead to greater perceived security and data sovereignty. Furthermore, for businesses with predictable and stable IT demands, the long-term cost of ownership for onsite systems might be lower than recurring cloud subscription fees.

However, onsite systems also come with significant responsibilities and costs. Organizations are solely responsible for the initial capital expenditure, ongoing maintenance, upgrades, power consumption, cooling, physical security, and disaster recovery planning. This requires dedicated IT staff with expertise in hardware management, network administration, and cybersecurity. Scalability can also be a challenge; expanding capacity often involves purchasing and installing new hardware, which can be a time-consuming and expensive process. Downtime due to hardware failures or maintenance is also entirely the responsibility of the organization to mitigate.
