Ongevulkaniseerd refers to rubber or rubber-like materials that have not undergone the process of vulcanization. Vulcanization is a chemical process that improves the strength, elasticity, and durability of rubber by forming cross-links between polymer chains. This is typically achieved by heating rubber with sulfur or other curing agents.

Unvulcanized rubber, in contrast, retains its original properties, which are often characterized by a tacky surface, a tendency to deform under pressure, and limited resistance to temperature changes. It is typically softer and more pliable than its vulcanized counterpart. The lack of cross-linking means that the polymer chains can slide past each other more easily, making it less resilient and more prone to permanent deformation.

Historically, natural rubber was used in its unvulcanized state for various applications. However, its poor performance in fluctuating temperatures and its sticky nature limited its widespread use. The discovery of vulcanization by Charles Goodyear in the 19th century revolutionized the rubber industry, enabling the creation of rubber products with vastly improved mechanical properties.

Today, unvulcanized rubber is still used in specific applications where its inherent properties are advantageous. These can include certain types of adhesives, sealants, and temporary components where flexibility and tackiness are desired before a subsequent curing or bonding step. It is also encountered in the early stages of rubber manufacturing before the vulcanization process is applied.
