Onepedal

Onepedal refers to a driving technique commonly described as one-pedal driving, used in many electric vehicles and some plug-in hybrids. In this approach the accelerator pedal controls both forward propulsion and deceleration. When the driver lifts off the accelerator, the vehicle quickly decelerates as the electric motor operates as a generator, converting kinetic energy into stored electrical energy. The braking system may supplement with friction brakes for stronger deceleration or complete stops. Many implementations offer adjustable levels of regenerative braking, allowing the driver to tailor the feel of one-pedal driving.

History and usage have grown with the expansion of regenerative braking technology in electric vehicles during the 2010s. The concept is often marketed as a feature name such as e-Pedal in some Nissan models or as One-Pedal Driving in others, and it has become a common option on a range of electric cars and some hybrids. While not universal, one-pedal driving is increasingly seen as a standard convenience feature in modern EVs, sometimes presented as the primary or default driving mode in city and stop-and-go conditions.

Advantages of onepedal driving include reduced driver workload, smoother acceleration and deceleration, improved energy efficiency through higher energy recovery, and decreased brake wear due to regenerative braking. Limitations include a learning curve for new users, a potential inconsistency with traditional braking feel, and varying regen strength depending on model and conditions. Drivers are typically advised that the conventional braking system remains available for emergency stops and for situations where stronger deceleration is required.
