Onboardings refers to the processes for integrating new individuals or organizations into a system or environment. In business, onboarding commonly describes the set of activities that introduce new employees to their roles, culture, and tools, as well as the steps used to welcome new customers and users to a product or service. It includes planning, provisioning, training, and ongoing support.

Employee onboarding vs customer onboarding. Employee onboarding aims to prepare a new hire to perform, comply with policies, and become part of the organization. Customer onboarding focuses on configuring accounts, guiding initial use, and helping the user realize value quickly. Both approaches seek engagement, retention, and faster time-to-value.

Core stages. Preboarding covers paperwork and IT provisioning. Day one or orientation introduces the organization, role expectations, and policies. Training and integration deliver role-specific knowledge and social connections. Ongoing onboarding provides continuous learning, mentorship, and progression.

Methods and tools. Onboarding can be in-person, remote, or blended. It relies on systems such as HR information systems, learning management systems, and product analytics, along with checklists and milestone trackers to standardize and scale the process.

Metrics and practices. Common metrics include time-to-productivity, ramp time, retention, user activation, and usage depth. Best practices include clear ownership, standardized yet personalized content, automation to reduce manual work, feedback loops, and defined milestones. Challenges include scaling across roles, maintaining consistency in remote settings, and sustaining engagement over time.
