Näönkorjausleikkaus, known in English as refractive surgery, is a surgical procedure performed to correct common vision problems such as myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism. The primary goal of these procedures is to reduce or eliminate the need for corrective eyewear like glasses or contact lenses. These surgeries work by reshaping the cornea, the transparent outer layer of the eye, or by implanting a lens within the eye.

Several techniques fall under the umbrella of refractive surgery. LASIK (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis) is one of the most common. It involves creating a thin flap in the cornea, lifting it, and then using a laser to precisely remove corneal tissue. The flap is then repositioned. PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy) is another laser-based procedure where the outer layer of the cornea (epithelium) is removed, and then the underlying tissue is reshaped with a laser. There is no flap created in PRK. Refractive lens exchange (RLE) involves removing the eye's natural lens and replacing it with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL). This procedure is often considered for individuals with significant farsightedness or presbyopia (age-related loss of near vision).

The suitability for näönkorjausleikkaus depends on various factors, including the type and severity of the refractive error, the individual's overall eye health, and their lifestyle. A thorough eye examination by an ophthalmologist is crucial to determine if a patient is a good candidate. While generally safe and effective, potential risks and side effects can occur, such as dry eyes, glare, or halos around lights, although these are typically temporary. The recovery time varies depending on the specific procedure performed.
