Näsöppningens, also known as nasal patency, refers to the openness of the nostrils and nasal passages. This is a critical aspect of respiratory health, as unobstructed airflow through the nose is essential for proper breathing. Nasal patency allows for efficient intake of air, humidification and warming of inhaled air, and filtering of particles and pathogens before they reach the lungs. Blockage or narrowing of the nasal passages can significantly impede breathing, leading to various symptoms and health issues.

Several factors can affect nasal patency. Congenital conditions, such as choanal atresia (a blockage of the back of the nasal passage) or nasal septal deviation (a crooked septum), can be present from birth. Acquired conditions include nasal polyps, enlarged adenoids, allergic rhinitis (hay fever), chronic sinusitis, and trauma to the nose. Inflammatory processes, whether due to allergies, infections, or irritants, can cause swelling of the nasal mucosa, reducing patency. The position of the head and body can also temporarily influence nasal airflow, with some individuals experiencing more congestion when lying down.

Assessment of nasal patency is often part of a routine physical examination. Clinicians may use simple methods like observing airflow with a mirror or asking a patient to breathe through each nostril individually. More objective measurements can involve rhinomanometry, which measures airflow and pressure, or acoustic rhinometry, which uses sound waves to assess the nasal cavity's dimensions. Maintaining good nasal patency is important for comfortable breathing, effective sense of smell, and overall respiratory well-being.
