It reflects the exposure of earning ability to market conditions, operational inefficiencies, regulatory changes, competitive pressures, or macroeconomic variables such as inflation, currency swings, or interest rate fluctuations.

The term emerged in the early 2000s as Hungarian enterprises sought a concise way to reference risks that specifically erode profitability rather than merely threaten cash flow or market position.
