Nonurothelial
Nonurothelial is a term used in pathology and urology to describe tumors arising in the urinary tract that do not originate from urothelial (transitional) epithelium. In the bladder, nonurothelial tumors are a minority compared with urothelial carcinoma and include squamous cell carcinoma, adenocarcinoma, small cell/neuroendocrine carcinoma, and various sarcomas. Similar nonurothelial histologies can occur in other parts of the urinary tract and surrounding structures.
Common nonurothelial bladder cancers include squamous cell carcinoma, which can be linked to chronic irritation or
Diagnosis relies on histopathology, typically after cystoscopy and biopsy, with immunohistochemistry to determine lineage. For example,
Treatment is histology- and stage-dependent. Localized nonurothelial lesions may be managed with surgical resection, with bladder-sparing
In classification schemes, nonurothelial tumors are distinguished from urothelial carcinoma and are described in bladder cancer
