Nondimensionalized

Nondimensionalized describes a system, equation, or dataset in which all quantities have been expressed as dimensionless variables by scaling with characteristic quantities. The process, commonly called nondimensionalization, replaces dimensional variables with scaled, unit-free counterparts and rewrites the governing equations in terms of these variables. Typically one selects characteristic length L, time T, velocity U, and other problem-specific scales to define dimensionless variables such as x* = x/L, t* = t/T, u* = u/U, and p* = p/(ρU^2) for fluid problems.

Substitution of these scaled variables into the equations yields dimensionless groups that capture the relative strength of competing effects. Well-known examples include the Reynolds number Re = ρUL/μ, the Mach number Ma = U/c, and the Froude number Fr = U^2/(gL). Other groups, such as the Prandtl number Pr = μCp/k, arise in heat and mass transfer problems. The particular dimensionless numbers depend on the model and the physical phenomena involved.

Nondimensionalization offers several practical benefits. It reduces the number of independent parameters, clarifies which processes govern behavior, improves numerical conditioning by avoiding disparate scales, and facilitates comparison across different systems through common dimensionless frameworks. It also supports similarity analysis and perturbation methods.

Applications span fluid dynamics, heat and mass transfer, chemical kinetics, biology, and engineering. The method is closely related to the Buckingham Pi theorem, which provides a systematic approach to generating dimensionless quantities that preserve the form of equations under scaling. Limitations include non-uniqueness in scale choice and the need to map results back to dimensional quantities for reporting.
