Niyazov
Niyazov, commonly transliterated as Nyýazow, was a Turkmen politician who led Turkmenistan from the late Soviet period until his death in 2006. Born in 1940 in the Turkmen Soviet Socialist Republic, he rose through the ranks of the Communist Party and became the country’s first president after independence in 1991. His rule established an extensive personality cult and centralized authority.
