The capital and largest city is Virelia on the main island of Nivara. The population is about 2.1 million. The official language is Nivouduan; Kalin and Seran are common minority languages.

Etymology: The name derives from ancient terms meaning water and land, reflecting the island geography. The inhabitants are called Nivouduan.

Government: Constitutional parliamentary republic. The president is the head of state; the prime minister leads government operations.
